Hotjar Pricing 2026: $0 to $739/mo, Now on Contentsquare
Last verified:
Hotjar no longer has a pricing page of its own: hotjar.com/pricing sends you to contentsquare.com/pricing, and the plan you buy is called Experience Analytics. The free plan covers 200,000 sessions a month at $0, and the paid Growth plan runs from $49 a month at 7,000 sessions to $739 a month at 200,000, with 20% off for paying yearly. Most pages ranking for "Hotjar pricing" still quote the retired daily-session ladder, which is why the numbers you find disagree with each other.
By Misha Gavura · 19 min read · Every figure read off contentsquare.com, help.hotjar.com or support.contentsquare.com on . Prices change; re-check before you buy.
The short answer
On contentsquare.com/pricing, as of September 3, 2026, the heatmap and replay product is Experience Analytics. Free is $0 for up to 200k monthly sessions. Growth starts at $49 a month for 7k sessions and climbs a slider to $739 a month for 200k sessions. Above that it is "talk to us". Pro starts "from 1m+ monthly sessions" and Enterprise is custom; neither prints a price.
Surveys are a second product, Voice of Customer: 100 responses a month free, then Growth from $99 a month for 500 responses up to $1,479 for 100,000. Paying yearly takes 20% off either product. Every new account gets a 15-day Growth trial with no card.
So the honest one-line answer to "how much does Hotjar cost" is: nothing, for most Shopify stores, until you want more than a month of history or more than a 5% replay sample. After that, $49 to $739 a month depending on how many sessions you want covered. Anyone quoting you a Hotjar price in sessions per day is reading a page that predates the merge.
Where Hotjar's pricing lives now
Request Hotjar's own pricing page and you get an HTTP 308, a permanent redirect, to
contentsquare.com/pricing/?utm_source=hotjar-pricing. The page you land on carries a
banner that reads, verbatim: "Looking for Hotjar pricing? You're in the right place. Contentsquare
includes all your favorite Hotjar tools plus much more."
The dates matter because they explain why the search results are a mess. Contentsquare acquired Hotjar in 2021 and ran it separately. Contentsquare's support centre states that "As of 1 July 2025, Hotjar (Hotjar Ltd. Malta) merged into the Contentsquare Group." Then, per the Hotjar help centre article updated September 2, 2026, existing Hotjar accounts started being moved across "in phases, with the first group of customers being contacted from 26 August." Each account gets a 30-day transition with both platforms collecting data, after which "your Hotjar subscription plan switches to the Contentsquare Growth plan, unless your Account owner opts out before the deadline". The old Hotjar account goes read-only for 90 days and is then deleted.
So any pricing page that still says "35 sessions a day" is describing a product that is being
retired under its remaining customers. One detail from the plan data behind the pricing page is
useful here: each plan carries a flag called isHotjarPlan, true for Free and Growth,
false for Pro and Enterprise. That is Contentsquare's own line between the Hotjar-shaped product
and the enterprise platform.
The free plan, exactly
The Free plan card on contentsquare.com/pricing lists, verbatim: "200k monthly sessions", "1 project", "Replays, Heatmaps + Funnels", "Error & performance monitoring", "Basic surveys" and "Connect with LLMs (MCP)". The comparison table beneath it fills in the limits the card leaves out:
- Sessions: up to 200k a month, across every site in the account.
- Analytics collection rate: 100%. Nothing is sampled down on the heatmap and funnel side.
- Replays: "5% sessions captured (max. 10k)". You get analytics for every session, and a recording of one in twenty.
- Analytics data access: 1 month. Replay access: 1 month.
- Projects: 1. A project is one website; you can put several domains in it, but they share the allowance.
- Surveys: 100 responses a month and 3 surveys or feedback widgets at a time (from the Voice of Customer Free plan).
- Support: AI-powered only.
Contentsquare's own Hotjar landing page makes the comparison for you: the free plan "captures 200k sessions per month, compared to 35/day on Hotjar's free plan." Thirty-five a day is roughly a thousand a month, by my arithmetic; the landing page calls it "190x more data".
The limit that will actually push a store off Free is not sessions. It is the one month of data access: any before-and-after you try to run falls off the end of your own history within weeks. The 5% replay sample is the second constraint, and you do not get to pick which 5%.
The Growth ladder, every rung
Growth is one plan with one slider. The page's own instruction reads "use the slider to estimate the cost", and the card says "Starting from $49". These are the rungs the slider steps through, read off the plan data behind the page and checked against the rendered page. Prices are the pay-monthly figures; the yearly toggle is 20% lower.
| Monthly sessions | Per month, paid monthly | Replays included |
|---|---|---|
| 7k | $49 | 7k |
| 10k | $69 | 10k |
| 15k | $99 | 15k |
| 20k | $119 | 20k |
| 25k | $139 | 20k |
| 30k | $159 | 20k |
| 35k | $179 | 20k |
| 45k | $219 | 20k |
| 60k | $279 | 20k |
| 75k | $339 | 20k |
| 85k | $369 | 20k |
| 100k | $409 | 20k |
| 120k | $469 | 20k |
| 150k | $569 | 22k |
| 200k | $739 | 30k |
| 240k and up | Talk to sales | 36k and up |
Everything on Growth that Free does not have, from the card: "13 month data access" (the tooltip clarifies "13 months and 2 months for the Session Replays"), "3 projects", zone-based heatmaps, journey analysis, impact quantification, Sense Chat and AI summaries, and a lighter version of Sense Analyst. Support moves from AI-only to ticket-based.
Read the third column before the second. Replays match sessions one for one up to the 20k rung and then stop: 20k replays at 20k sessions, and still 20k replays at 120k sessions, where you are paying $469. The comparison table states the rule as "Up to 20k monthly sessions: 100% captured. Over 20k monthly sessions: 15% captured (min. 20k)", and the support article puts it as "20,000 or 15% monthly sessions (whichever is higher)". That is why the 150k rung shows 22k replays and the 200k rung 30k. Between 20k and 120k you are buying analytics coverage and history, not more recordings.
The price per thousand sessions falls as you climb, by my arithmetic on the vendor's rungs: $7.00 at 7k, $5.56 at 25k, $4.09 at 100k, $3.70 at 200k. If your traffic sits just above a rung, the next one up is usually a small step: 20k to 25k is $20.
Pro and Enterprise
Pro's card reads "From 1m+ monthly sessions" and has no price. It adds up to 6 projects, retroactive precision filtering, multi-session replay summaries, revenue goals and tracking, and replay capture of "Up to 100% sessions captured". Enterprise reads "Custom monthly sessions", unlimited projects, experience monitoring, data feeds, dedicated support and SLAs. Both carry no figure anywhere on contentsquare.com, and the support centre says to contact sales, so no figure appears here.
For a Shopify merchant that is a ceiling: the self-serve product tops out at 200k monthly sessions and $739, and past that you are negotiating an enterprise contract.
Surveys are priced separately
What used to be Hotjar Ask is now Voice of Customer, metered on monthly responses across all your surveys and feedback widgets. Free gives you "Up to 100 monthly survey and feedback responses" and 3 surveys or widgets at a time. Growth starts at $99 and steps up as follows:
| Monthly responses | Per month, paid monthly |
|---|---|
| 500 | $99 |
| 1,000 | $129 |
| 2,500 | $249 |
| 5,000 | $349 |
| 7,500 | $459 |
| 10,000 | $529 |
| 25,000 | $689 |
| 50,000 | $949 |
| 100,000 | $1,479 |
Growth adds advanced targeting, AI sentiment tagging and your own branding. Pro is quote-only. At the response cap, "surveys stop showing until the 1st of the next month, or you upgrade your plan."
If you buy both Growth plans, the pricing FAQ gives "a 10% discount on the lowest selected plan", and says it stacks on the yearly discount. The rendered page shows the arithmetic at the base rungs: $49 plus $99 is $148 a month paid monthly, and the yearly toggle shows $114, which is $79 for surveys plus $35 for analytics ($39 with a further 10% off).
Billing terms: monthly, yearly, currency, refunds
From the pricing page's own FAQ and the support articles on plans and trials, all read the same day. They are better than the category norm.
- No annual lock-in on Growth. "Our growth plans do not require an annual contract. If you choose to pay monthly, you can cancel your subscription at any time by downgrading to the Free plan." The downgrade takes effect at the end of the current monthly cycle.
- Yearly saves 20%, card or PayPal only. "When annual payment is set up in-app with a credit card or PayPal, a 20% discount before VAT is added to your bill. Note that this discount is not applicable when paying by invoice." Switching mid-cycle bills a full year from that date.
- Priced per account, not per site. "The prices are for your entire account within one geographic region ... no matter how many sites you have under the same account." Sessions are shared across projects first come, first served.
- Currency follows geography. European customers, and the FAQ names the UK explicitly, are billed in euros. Everyone else is billed in US dollars. The page renders in dollars from North America; the third-party pages quoting euros were reading it from Europe.
- 30-day money-back on new Growth accounts. "Cancel within 30 days and you'll receive a full refund." After that you are charged to the end of the cycle you are in.
- 15-day Growth trial, no card. "There are no auto-charges, and you don't need to input any payment details." The trial starts when you install the tracking code, covers up to 200,000 sessions, and drops you to Free when it ends, with your data intact.
What counts as a session, and how it lines up with Shopify's number
The meter changed with the merge, and the change is the single most useful thing on this page if you are sizing a plan. Hotjar metered sessions per day and sampled when you went over. Contentsquare meters sessions per month and stops collecting when you go over. Those are different products to budget for.
Contentsquare's definition, from the support article updated September 2, 2026: "A session is a single visit to your site by a user. It starts when they arrive and ends when: they're inactive for 30 minutes; they leave your site and don't return within 30 minutes." The pricing FAQ adds that the count is "for your entire account (and all sites)". Pageviews are irrelevant to the meter: the article's own example is "A user visits your homepage, browses 5 products, and checks out = 1 session (not 7 pageviews)."
Shopify's definition, from its Analytics overview help page: "A session ends after 30 minutes of no activity, and at midnight UTC. Because the same visitor can have multiple sessions, the number of sessions is usually higher than the number of visitors."
The two numbers agree on the 30-minute rule and diverge in three places. Shopify cuts every session at midnight UTC, which pushes its count up. Contentsquare only counts visitors whose browser ran its script; Hotjar's help article lists ad blockers, Do Not Track, private browsing and disabled cookies as reasons a session is never seen, which pushes its count down. And Contentsquare counts across every site in the account, so a second store draws from the same allowance.
The practical rule: take the Sessions figure from your Shopify Analytics overview for your busiest recent month and treat it as a ceiling. The Contentsquare count for the same traffic will be at or below it. Pick the rung at or just above that, because the penalty for undersizing is going dark for the rest of the month, not an overage charge.
One legacy behaviour to check on your own account: Hotjar's help centre says it "ignores sessions shorter than 30 seconds by default". The Contentsquare session article does not mention a 30-second floor, so do not assume it carries over.
What it costs at four Shopify traffic levels
Four stores, sized by their Shopify monthly sessions. The prices are the rungs above; the yearly column is the vendor's 20% applied by me, since the page only renders the discounted figure at the base rung ($39). The annual totals are my multiplication.
| Shopify sessions / mo | Free plan | Growth rung | Paid monthly | Paid yearly (20% off) | Replays on Growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7,000 | $0, about 350 replays | 7k | $49 ($588 / yr) | $39.20 ($470 / yr) | 7k, all of them |
| 25,000 | $0, about 1,250 replays | 25k | $139 ($1,668 / yr) | $111.20 ($1,334 / yr) | 20k |
| 100,000 | $0, about 5,000 replays | 100k | $409 ($4,908 / yr) | $327.20 ($3,926 / yr) | 20k |
| 200,000 | $0, 10,000 replays (the cap) | 200k | $739 ($8,868 / yr) | $591.20 ($7,094 / yr) | 30k |
Two things jump out. First, at every one of those traffic levels the Free plan covers the full session count with 100% analytics collection. The upgrade buys history (13 months instead of 1), more replays, and the Growth-only analysis features. It does not buy coverage, until you pass 200k.
Second, a 100k-session store goes from about 5,000 recordings a month on Free to 20,000 on Growth for $409. Nobody watches 5,000 recordings a month, let alone 20,000. The history is the real purchase.
Add surveys and each row moves by $99 a month at 500 responses, less the 10% bundle discount on the cheaper plan. The page does not render those combinations, so check the slider.
Old Hotjar plan names, mapped to the new ones
If you are coming from an older article, a colleague's memory, or an existing Hotjar invoice, this is the translation. The old names and allowances are as the third-party pages and Hotjar's own help centre describe them; the new ones are from contentsquare.com/pricing and Contentsquare's terminology guide for Hotjar customers.
| Hotjar called it | Contentsquare calls it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Observe (heatmaps + recordings) | Experience Analytics | Same product family; Recordings are now called Replays or Session Replay. |
| Ask (surveys + feedback) | Voice of Customer | Metered on monthly responses, as before. |
| Engage (user interviews) | User Research | Listed in the terminology article; the pricing data labels the survey plans "Engage EOL update". |
| Basic (free, 35 sessions/day) | Free (200k sessions/month) | Contentsquare's own comparison: 200k a month versus 35 a day. |
| Plus / Business (100 to 500 daily sessions) | Growth, sized on the slider | One plan; you pick the monthly session rung from 7k to 200k. |
| Scale (500+ daily, up to 270k daily) | Growth above 200k, then Pro / Enterprise | Rungs past 200k are "talk to us"; Pro starts "from 1m+ monthly sessions". |
The terminology guide also renames the furniture: Sites are now Projects, Organizations are Accounts, and the old "traffic coverage widget" becomes the "session allowance" widget. If you were on a paid Hotjar plan, the migration FAQ says your account switches to Contentsquare Growth at the end of your 30-day window and cannot be changed during it. Check which rung you landed on before the first invoice.
What Hotjar can see on a Shopify store
Short version, because we have written the long one. The tracking code goes into your theme, and it records what happens on pages your theme renders: home, collection, product, cart. Shopify's hosted checkout is not your theme, and on standard plans you cannot put third-party scripts on it, so the recording stops at the checkout door. Funnels that run through checkout are therefore funnels to the checkout, not through it. The full coverage map, including the theme-shaped blind spots and the consent surface, is in Hotjar for Shopify: what it can and cannot see.
There is no Hotjar app published by Hotjar or Contentsquare. The listing at apps.shopify.com/hotjar is "Hotjar Install", with "App support provided by Dualsided", a third party. The documented route is pasting the tracking code into the theme.
Why other pricing pages disagree with this one
Three of the pages on the first page of results were read the same day as the vendor pages. All three are careful, well-formatted, and describe a ladder that no longer exists.
Userpilot's Hotjar pricing article, marked updated April 3, 2026, lists Observe as Basic free at 35 sessions a day, Plus $39 a month for 100 a day, Business $99 for 500 a day, Scale $213, and Ask at $59 / $79 / $159. That is the daily-session Hotjar ladder. None of those plan names or rungs appear on contentsquare.com/pricing today.
UXtweak's article, last updated January 17, 2026, quotes the same ladder in euros: Plus €32 a month for 100 daily sessions, Business from €80 up to "€9,448/month for 270,000 daily sessions", and headlines the range as "€0 to €9,500+ per month". The euro figures are the 20%-off yearly prices as seen from Europe, which is why they look like a third ladder; they are the second one, discounted and in a different currency.
LiveSession's comparison, updated March 26, 2025, quotes "$32 per month" for 100 daily sessions and "$213 per month just for 500 sessions". Same ladder, older still.
None of these authors did anything wrong; the page they read was accurate when they read it. But the plan names, currency, meter and rungs all changed at once, so a summary written from the old page cannot be patched by changing one number. It has to be rewritten from the new one.
Cheaper or free alternatives
Three tools do the same job for less, or for nothing, and all three were priced the same day. The fuller comparison is in Hotjar alternatives for Shopify.
Microsoft Clarity is the one to know about. Its homepage states, verbatim, "Free forever. Built to grow with your business. No limits on traffic." Heatmaps and session recordings with no session cap and no paid tier. Against a Contentsquare Free plan whose real limits are a one-month history and a 5% replay sample, Clarity is the obvious first install, and what Clarity actually costs on Shopify covers where its own edges are.
Lucky Orange sells through two doors with two ladders. On luckyorange.com/pricing: Build $32 a month paid annually or $39 monthly for 3,500 sessions, Grow $72 paid annually for 10,000, Expand $199 annually or $249 monthly from 50,000, Scale $839 annually or $1,049 monthly from 300,000, with a 7-day trial and 60 days of base storage. On its Shopify App Store listing: free at 100 sessions a month, then $19 for 500, $39 for 3,500 and $89 for 10,000, billed every 30 days. At 10,000 sessions that is $89 against Contentsquare's $69, with 60 days of storage against 13 months. Our write-up is Lucky Orange on Shopify.
Crazy Egg meters pageviews rather than sessions, so the comparison is inexact. crazyegg.com/pricing today: Starter $29 for 5,000 tracked pageviews, Plus $99 for 150,000, Pro $249 for 500,000, Enterprise $599 for 1,000,000, with the footnote "All plans are billed annually. No overages, ever." and a 30-day trial. A 25k-session Shopify store will see far more than 5,000 pageviews, so its real Crazy Egg floor is the $99 Plus tier paid for a year up front, against $139 a month with no commitment or $0 on Contentsquare Free. The two-ladder story is in Crazy Egg pricing.
Verdict
On price, the current Hotjar is a better deal than the old Hotjar at every level, and it is not close. A free plan that covers 200k sessions with full heatmap and funnel data would have cost a Hotjar Business or Scale subscription two years ago. The paid ladder has no annual lock-in, a 30-day refund, a documented no-overage rule, and rungs close enough together that most stores can find one within $20 or $30 of their traffic.
The reasons to hesitate are not about money. The product you are buying is now the bottom two rungs of an enterprise analytics platform, with the roadmap pointing up and away from a small store's needs, and the migration this month shows the vendor is willing to move customers between products on a 30-day notice. If you want a heatmap tool and nothing more, Clarity does it free with no cap. If you want history and funnels and are happy to be a Contentsquare customer, Growth at your traffic rung is fairly priced.
Whichever you pick, a heatmap or a replay tells you where shoppers hesitated. It is a hypothesis, not a result. Decide how you will test what the recordings suggest before you buy the recordings, and check whether you have the traffic to conclude that test at all; our significance calculator will tell you in about a minute.
Disclosure. We are building a conversion-testing tool for Shopify. It is not on the Shopify App Store and cannot be installed on a live store yet, so this page has nothing to sell you. Hotjar, sold as Contentsquare, is a heatmap, replay and survey tool, and if that is what you need the free plan is a reasonable place to start.
Questions merchants keep asking
- How much does Hotjar cost in 2026?
- Hotjar is sold as Contentsquare now, and hotjar.com/pricing redirects there. On contentsquare.com/pricing, read September 3, 2026, the heatmap and replay product (Experience Analytics) is free for up to 200k monthly sessions, and the Growth plan runs from $49 a month for 7k sessions to $739 a month for 200k. Paying yearly takes 20% off. Pro and Enterprise have no published price.
- Is Hotjar free?
- Yes, and the free plan is far bigger than the old Hotjar Basic plan. Contentsquare's Free plan includes 200k monthly sessions, heatmaps, session replays, funnels, error and performance monitoring, and 100 survey responses a month, with 1 project. The catches are that only 5% of sessions get a replay (capped at 10k), and analytics data access is 1 month. Contentsquare's own Hotjar page compares that to "35/day on Hotjar's free plan".
- Why does hotjar.com/pricing redirect to Contentsquare?
- Because the two products merged. Contentsquare acquired Hotjar in 2021, the Hotjar help centre says Hotjar Ltd merged into the Contentsquare Group as of 1 July 2025, and from 26 August 2026 existing Hotjar accounts are being moved onto Contentsquare in phases. A request to hotjar.com/pricing returns an HTTP 308 permanent redirect to contentsquare.com/pricing.
- What happened to Hotjar's Basic, Plus, Business and Scale plans?
- They were replaced by a Free / Growth / Pro / Enterprise ladder for each product. Basic maps to Free. Plus, Business and most of Scale collapse into a single Growth plan whose price is set by a monthly-sessions slider rather than by a daily allowance. The top of the old Scale range, and anything above 200k monthly sessions, is now a sales conversation or the Pro plan, which starts from 1m+ monthly sessions.
- What happened to Hotjar Observe, Ask and Engage?
- Observe is now called Experience Analytics, Ask is now Voice of Customer, and Engage is listed as User Research in Contentsquare's terminology guide. Each is priced separately. The plan data behind the pricing page labels the survey plans "Engage EOL update", so treat interviews as a product that has been retired or folded in, and confirm with sales before you count on it.
- How does Hotjar count a session, and does it match Shopify's number?
- Closely but not exactly. Contentsquare defines a session as one visit that ends after 30 minutes of inactivity, counted across all sites in your account. Shopify's Analytics overview says a session ends after 30 minutes of no activity and also at midnight UTC, so Shopify reports slightly more sessions for the same traffic. Use your Shopify sessions figure as a ceiling when picking a rung.
- What does Hotjar cost for a Shopify store doing 25,000 sessions a month?
- Either $0 or $139 a month. The Free plan covers 25k sessions with full heatmap and funnel data, but only about 5% of sessions get a replay and history is 1 month. The 25k rung of Growth is $139 a month paid monthly, with 20k replays and 13 months of data. At 7k sessions Growth is $49; at 100k, $409; at 200k, $739.
- Does Hotjar charge overages if I go over my sessions?
- No. On Free and Growth, when the monthly session allowance is used up Contentsquare stops collecting new sessions for the rest of the calendar month, and collection restarts on the 1st. Existing data stays. The support article says you get email warnings at roughly 80 to 90% of your allowance, and unused sessions do not roll over.
- Is there a Hotjar free trial?
- Yes. Every new account gets a 15-day trial of the Growth plan, no credit card, no auto-charge. The support FAQ says the trial starts when you install the tracking code, covers up to 200,000 sessions, and drops you to the Free plan when it ends. New Growth subscriptions also carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Is Hotjar billed monthly or annually?
- Your choice. The pricing page has a Pay monthly / Pay yearly toggle labelled Save 20%, and the FAQ says Growth plans do not require an annual contract; you can cancel monthly plans any time by downgrading to Free. The 20% discount applies to card and PayPal payments, not invoices. Buying both a paid Experience Analytics plan and a paid Voice of Customer plan takes a further 10% off the cheaper of the two.
A note on sources. Every price, plan name, limit and term on this page was read on September 3, 2026 from contentsquare.com/pricing (the plan data behind the page, then checked against the page as rendered in a browser), contentsquare.com/hotjar, the Hotjar and Contentsquare help centres, and Shopify's Analytics help. hotjar.com/pricing was requested directly and returned a 308 redirect to contentsquare.com/pricing. The pricing page is a slider rather than a table, so the rungs quoted are the slider's own steps. Yearly prices other than the $39 base rung, the annual totals, the per-thousand-session figures and the 35-a-day comparison are my arithmetic on the vendor's numbers and are labelled as such. Pro and Enterprise publish no price and none is given. Prices change. Re-check before you buy, and treat this as a map of how the pricing works rather than a quote.
